Connect an AI assistant to CourseIO
Connect CourseIO to an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT and you can work on your courses from a chat: ask it to draft a course, tidy a lesson script or translate a course, and it does the work in your CourseIO account.
What connecting does
Your assistant gets its own secure access to one CourseIO organisation, through CourseIO's MCP server (the standard way AI assistants work with other apps). It can only do what you allow, and you can disconnect it at any time.
The server address
This is the address you paste into your assistant. It's the same for everyone: you choose your organisation when you sign in.
Add CourseIO to your assistant
Assistants rename their menus from time to time, but the steps stay the same: add a custom connector, paste the server address, then sign in to CourseIO and allow access.
Claude
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and choose to add a custom connector.
- Name it CourseIO, paste the server address and add it.
- Select Connect, sign in to CourseIO, choose your organisation and select Allow.
What's available depends on your Claude plan and, for work accounts, your organisation's settings.
ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps & Connectors. If you can't add one, turn on developer mode under Advanced settings.
- Create a new connector, name it CourseIO, paste the server address and choose OAuth for authentication.
- Connect, sign in to CourseIO, choose your organisation and select Allow.
What's available depends on your ChatGPT plan and, for work accounts, your workspace's settings.
Other assistants
Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in can connect in the same way.
What your assistant can do
Once connected, just ask in your own words. Your assistant can:
- Read your coursesCourses, modules, lessons and videos, and your lesson credit balance.
- Create coursesDraft a new course from a topic, a syllabus or your own notes.
- Edit and rebuildChange scripts, slides, handouts and captions, and rebuild lessons after changes.
- TranslateMake a course available in another language.
- ExportExport courses for your learning platform.
Editing, rebuilding and translating need Course Studio to be switched on for your organisation.
Anything that uses lesson credits always shows you the price first, and only goes ahead once you agree.
Permissions and privacy
- You sign in on CourseIO's own page, never in the chat, and your assistant never sees your password.
- You choose which organisation to connect, and the assistant can only reach that organisation's courses.
- Disconnect at any time in Settings → Connected apps. Access stops straight away.
- CourseIO never sees your conversation with the assistant, only the requests it makes to CourseIO for you (its tool calls).
- Our Privacy Policy explains what CourseIO stores for connected assistants, how long we keep it and how you control it.
Troubleshooting
- It says “Invite only for now”
- Connecting AI assistants is being switched on gradually. If it isn't on for your organisation yet, cancel and try again once we've told you it's ready, or contact us.
- It says “This request has expired”
- Connection requests only last 15 minutes. Go back to your assistant and connect CourseIO again.
- I'm signed in to the wrong account
- On the page that asks you to allow access, select “Not you?” and sign in with the right account.
- My assistant didn't open again
- After you allow access, your browser goes back to the assistant. If nothing happens, use the link on the page, then close the tab.
